There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to home based business opportunities. You can be very successful with many of today's home based business opportunities, but only if you are careful to avoid these common pitfalls.

The one key fact you must understand in order to operate a successful home based business is that it is no different than running any other business. You must first learn and understand how to operate a business, and then just do it from home. The main reason most home based businesses fail is because the owner failed to learn how to be a successful business owner.

Look, you may be the best cabinet maker in the world. But that does not qualify you to own a cabinet making business. As a matter of fact, making good cabinets and owning a business are two completely different skill sets! Cabinet makers build cabinets, entrepreneurs build businesses. If you want to be successful with any of today's home based business opportunities, you will first need to learn how to be an entrepreneur.

The first step is to make sure the opportunity has the three most important business principles:

• Assets
• Leverage
• Residual Income

Assets
An asset is anything that produces income for you and your business, while a liability is anything that costs more than it brings in. For example, owning a limousine is probably an asset, but owning a Corvette is probably a liability (unless you rent it out by the hour). If your business has assets, those assets can earn you money 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Your business can be earning you money while you lay on the beach.

Don't be your business's only asset, or else you won't have a home business, just a home based job! Avoid home based business opportunities that are really just an opportunity for you to work twice as hard, at home.

Leverage
Leverage can take many forms, like credit (financial leverage), personnel (time leverage), tools (mechanical leverage), etc. My favorite kind of leverage is team building. There are not enough hours in the day to do everything you need to do to run a successful business.

Just because your business is operated from your home does not mean you can't have employees. If your business uses the Power of Other People, those people can earn you money 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Your business can be earning you money while you spend time with your family. Avoid home based business opportunities that require you to be a "One Man Show".

Residual Income
The most common paradigm is that you work once and then get paid once. Then you work again, and get paid again. This model has you trading time for money. Bad news, this is called "a job".

Your business must allow you to work once and get paid over and over again. For example, if you sell life insurance, you sell one policy and then collect premiums for twenty years. If you sell cell phone services, you sell one plan and get paid for two to five years. If you business offers residual income, you can earn money year after year, even after you have retired!

Avoid home based business opportunities that require you to trade time for money. You need residual income!

Things to Avoid While Evaluating Home Based Business Opportunities

• No Leverage
• No Assets
• No Residual Income
• Don't be on the clock
• Don't buy a job
• Don't be a one man show
• Don't reinvent the wheel

Get a Referral
Don't go it on your own; get a referral.

If you want to achieve success, find somebody that has already achieved the level of success you want, and then do exactly what they did. You can learn from others, or you can learn from your own mistakes.
